Settings on battery when using shore power

Not to say something stupid. But turning off the breaker, your turning off 120v A.C. and the battery will automatically kick in. This it true with mine so if I really want to shut it off, I must reach in and turn the thermostat dial to off.

Garmin GPS 546 Fish Finder Sonar?

I hate to repeat myself. But your not saying how its done. Both Airmar that makes most of Garmin transducers and Garmin is saying no. From: http://www.dulong.net/images/documentations/NMEA2000NetworksGeneralInfo_0154-173_112006.pdf NOTE: Full Sonar Chart returns CANNOT be transmitted on a NMEA 2000 network, because they take too much bandwidth for the network. Every sonar display unit requires its own transducer. If, however, you have a sonar display unit (with sonar bottom lock) connected to the NMEA bus, it will share the digital depth with all display units on the network. From: https://www.ohiogamefishing.com/threads/lowrance-nmea-2000-network-lessons-learned.114491/ Sonar signals take up too much bandwidth for the NMEA 2000 network to handle. To share sonar signals between two sonars you will need an Ethernet cable between the units, or Ethernet connection thru use of an LSS module.

Convince me: AGM vs lead acid

Yes, the coils need to turn. So i was thinking that the load would be constant on the belt. But no, Todd is say if the load goes up. Than the mag field increases putting more of a load on the belt. Opponent when the load decreases. Makes sense.

Garmin GPS 546 Fish Finder Sonar?

Read down the first few post. You though out the first insult. Saying "spouting out a bunch of BS". Or did you forget that. Also, go back in the past post and refresh your memory. Somebody else though out a comment in a joke.. In a joke i agreed, you got upset and i did apologize. But lets get back to the point. Now if Water Dang knows something that we dont, god bless him. But Airmar and Garmin both agree that a NMEA2k transducer can not be used for sonar. Your saying it can. After all this, please how can it? As far as misleading, as mentioned before. You can not hook up a sonar transducer to a 546. There so no port for it or even a network port. So no sonar. A NEMA2k can connect to ether one but again no sonar just depth. Yes its supported by both units. Your right on that point, but your saying just because its supported that you have sonar. Not so.

My batteries charge no matter what and that is how it was wired from Chap. Interesting...............

Oh!!!! So there is a clutch........... Thats what I was trying to understand.

Convince me: AGM vs lead acid

I have a hard time believing that. Not doubting you!! But everything in the Alt (the windings) is turning. Than the regulator will will adjust to the needs of the amp load. When you say " Less voltage, less demand, less load. " Less load on the ALt and not on the engine I would think? But I am no expert on Alts!

Convince me: AGM vs lead acid

I am just trying to use logic, but not sure. As in, "This also puts less load on the engine, which help fuel economy (emissions)." I would think if that was to happen, there would need to be a clutch to engage and disengage the Alt. Other wise its always turning. Yes?

Settings on battery when using shore power

I do too, but only for the fact that if I leave anything on, its now off. Case in point, my wife thought she shut the water off in the head. It was slowly dripping, the pump was cycling on and off until the tank was dry and the pump went bad. But what was left turned "on" ? Just an example, if you have 15 amp load and a 10 amp charger. The charger can not keep up and your battery will go dead. What was pulling down the dead battery or was its time up and just went dead?

Convince me: AGM vs lead acid

I don't think a stronger battery would mean a lower voltage output. Unless I misunderstand. I mean that it would take longer in time for the charge voltage to happen. Due to the fact that the battery would take longer to discharge.

    Yep

    @#*%$ Wind & Storms!!

Really, no cleats! Can you go after them for damages?? As seamenship goes, thats no way to secure a boat just for that reason.

Garmin GPS 546 Fish Finder Sonar?

OK, but what i was driving at is that NEMA2k transducers can not do sonar. Not enough bandwidth. At least thats what Garmin and and Airmar has told me when i called them. Maybe i am missing something?? So when you say his right, "if you have a transducer you should have sonar". I dont understand when the manufacturers say no. Garmin is saying it must be a S unit or there black box unit needs to be installed for sonar.

Yep! if you know your GPH rate and roughly whats in your tank. You'er all set!!

Garmin GPS 546 Fish Finder Sonar?

I think thats what I was saying?? " 546 shouldn't be able to use sonar since there is no way to connect to the remote sounder box with that unit. " NMEA2K will only give you depth and no sonar. Hatem was say that ether transducer will give you sonar. Not true, or at least that what I have read. But you are saying you can, something odd there. This is why twisted pair is now come into the boating world. That why I was asking the OP which unit he has before giving advice. I have two 741 units, not the S version. I installed Garmin's black box unit and can now display radar on and sonar on both units over ethernet. I am not NMEA certified, but do hold a net+ and A+ certs so i do have an understanding of networks. To be honest, N2k is an old type of backbone bus. The bigger boats are now using ethernet and very interesting on how and why this is done. Where the backbone bus is more beefer. But the twisted pair has more bandwidth. Good reading.

Garmin GPS 546 Fish Finder Sonar?

The NEM2k port will only give you depth. But no sonar meaning no picture/fishfinder of the bottom and/or no returns on fish. Which is what the OP is asking or talking about. This is why there is a price difference in the 2 units. That type of data is too much for that type of bus so a dedicated port on the unit is needed. You can go to Hatems first link, its only depth and temp on the first few units. No mention of sonar because its NMEA2k. See page 2 http://www.dulong.net/images/documentations/NMEA2000NetworksGeneralInfo_0154-173_112006.pdf on this, no sonar on a 2k network.

Garmin GPS 546 Fish Finder Sonar?

The 546 has no transducer connection. Here is the link to the 546 https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/101716#specs As you can see under "Connection" no transducer port. Thats why its a 546 and not a 546S. That S stands for sonar. I think you need to look again and take you emotions out of it since you are wrong. Now your 1st link is about a NMEA2K transducers that will only give you depth, no sonar. Thats another topic but that is not sonar and that is what the Op is looking for. Also you are not exlplaning the hardware needed to use your suggested transducer. Your 2nd link can only be used on a 546s and not the 546. You might have good intentions but very misleading and rude.

Garmin GPS 546 Fish Finder Sonar?

I don't get how some one can say get the sonar and suggest a transducer with out knowing if one can be connected to the GPS unit. The OP is stating I am pretty sure I don't have that option. So buying that transducer would be useless. Lets ask, is your unit a 546 or a 546S. Some of us know that the S is for sonar.

    Vacu Flush

Mine works great. its 8 years old and still going strong. BUT as Phillbo asked, whats wrong and which system do you have? You might just need regular maintenance, after all its 15 years old.

Newbie here with a Garmin question

I have two 741s. I wish I had the 9" GPS, but anyways. There good solid units. I use both for GPS, Radar, AIS and fishfinders. There connected to a NEMA2k network and a gateway to my engines. Could not be happier with how they work. There was just a firmware release and and one unit updated the other over the network, very cool!

Bilge pump - try to replace or add new?

Cut the wires, leave the pump and install a new and bigger one.

I keep mine in the cabin on the charger. if its on the bag, willl the batteries be good?

    Fuel Gauge

That is normal, welcome to boating. You may want to add a fuel flow sensor or if you boat is in the 2010 to 2013 range. You can tap into the engines computer for your GPH & more.
