  1. Have you looked to see where the spark plugs are on the genset? Is the room that tight?

    Spark plugs are one of the easiest things to replace. You might be able to do it yourself.

    I did not care for Sea Dek ether. Plus they would not honor there own warranty.

    As for what I need help with: Do they sit on a shelf or are they actually mounted to the frame of the opening and float so to speak?  I imagine I'd have to fabricate some type of frame around it. 

    I am not sure. I would download the instructions before I would buy it.  

  4. Some Mercs have a extra raw water pick-up. I had one and I was told it was for warm water use to help cool the engine down. Being in Boston I did not need it.

    Nice article, it has nothing to do with amount of boats raw water cooled vs freshwater cooled.

    In  my system the block is cooled by raw water.

    Raw water cools the antifreeze which in turn cools the manifolds and risers.

    My manifolds and risers are cast aluminum......I dont even want to know what they cost to replace.


    You right, but I bet there are more closed than open. The bigger the boat the more it is needed.  If the engine does not reach and maintain a proper operating temperature there would be a loss of power and high fuel cost.

    Even in a saltwater environment.

    Why do you think, on most boating websites there are so many manny and riser  replacement threads.

    Some of the biggest and smallest boats use a closed system.  Size of the engine has nothing to do with it unless your talking about outboards. From a 3L gas engine to the largest diesels can have a closed system.

    Think about it. You have AF in the block 24/7 365 days which means no air. On an open system the top of the block is drained and air can get in. Rust is formed by the reaction of iron and oxygen.  Plus on a open system you have the air that is already mixed into the sea/lake water adding to the oxidation.

    Plus most saltwater boats have a closed cooling system. This means less rust in the block than a lake boat with an open system. 

  9. I too have a 290 with no genset! I installed 3 house batteries which will last me about 24hrs with the fridge on. I am not dealing with ice and a ice chest. The boat is small enough with out adding to it. I do have a 50 watt solar panel that extends the batteries a few more hours. I also carry a 2200 watt inverter/generator and store that where the genset would go. I use it about 45 minutes each morning to charge up the batteries, make coffee and heat up the hot water.

    I run the generator on the swimming platform. Not great, but it works! The other thing I did, is I replace the stock water heater (it needed it anyways) that used 1500 watts with a better one that uses 750 watts. So I can make coffee and hot water at the same time. If the batteries are not to low, the charger can be on too.

I've ordered a smart isolator, essentially a VSR that I'll install between the two. I'll report back if this is indeed a solution.

    In your first post you said that you have a VSR. Why install a 2nd one? You just need to check the connections.

    Yep, but some day you may want to use the heater. Why shorten them..............
