2009 6.2L/377 sudden loss of power

I've seen it happen twice before on cars, also with no reasonable answer as to why. The gut at Merc said he has never seen it before in his career there (15 years). Hopefully it's some kind of fluke and I won't see anymore issues because of it. Checking the distributer (gear) for play will now become part of my regular maintainance. I had to change oil this time because of the fuel getting into it. It hurts to spend the cash on the oil and filter to do multiple changes during the season because of the low hours I put on the boat, but there is no other choice. Thanks for the input.

Here’s what happened to mine, Distributor gear wore away and threw the timing way out of whack causing all of the problems. Merc was “gracious” enough to eat the cost of the gear (probably about $20) but not the rest of the parts to do the diagnosis. The big question is how much bearing damage was done by the brass getting into the oiling system?

I did some more investigating on Sunday. Had read there was problems with head gaskets between cylinders 4 & 6, and 3 & 5. Did a compression test and all seemed fine. I did notice 3 & 5 spark plugs looked as if they were not firing. This could cause the cylinders to get 'washed" (fuel mixed into the crank case) which would attribute to the oil pressure dropping as the oil thinned out. Instead of wasting a bunch of time and money trying to trouble shoot, I'm taking it into Basa's in Bolingbrook. I've heard good things about them and they have always been helpful. Won't have it for this weekend (some of the best weather this season), but hopefully for labor day. Thanks for the info, I'll let you know how it turns out (here's link to my posting 2009 6.2L/377 sudden loss of power)

UPDATE. I'm pretty sure the loss of oil pressure is due to cylinders 3 and 5 not firing, which in turn would "wash" the cylinders, and expose the gasoline to the oil system. Now the question is how to determine how much damage that did, and why 3 and 5 are not firing.

2009 6.2L/377 sudden loss of power

Help PLEASE. 2009 256ssi with 6.2, with 150 hrs. All was well until yesterday on lake michigan. Stopped for lunch, and when I started the boat to move to a different spot, it started fine. When I placed the boat in gear (was towing a tube with approximatly 150lbs of rider) no power at all. Boat felt as if I was dragging a 500lb anchor. headed back to port which was about a 45 min ride, the engine seemed to be losing power the entire ride. COuld only get to about 3000rpm but the boat seem to be slowing down. My biggest concern is the oil pressure kept dropping. At idle when I arrived at port it was 15psi, under way it had dropped as low as 30psi. I have read and was told today there is an issue with cylenders head gaskets, that cykinders 3 & 5, and 4 & 6 are the issue. Did a compression test today, 3, 5 and 6 are fine as far as compression, but 3 and 5 look as if they are not firing, plugs are black and somewhat fouled. Any one have any ideas or similar issues? Unfortunatly if it's a major repair the season may be over (Chicago area so season is short to begin with). Thanks

Did you ever get an answer as to why it failed? I just had that happen to me yesterday, 150 hrs on a 2009 and warrenty expired in May. Was on lake michigan, running fine, stopped for lunch and when I stsrted back up is when the problems started. I'm looking for a mechanic in the Chicago area, with what looks to be the best weather of the summer coming up, I just want to get it repaired. If it's a motor, I just don't have the time to do it. Thanks
