    Cooler

The cooler on my 2003 230 SSI was badly UV damaged. It is the Igloo 25qt. marine cooler. They are no longer available, neither the original or the "ultra". Home Depot and Walmart show them online but there is no inventory. You can find them on Amazon for ~$130, but they are new old stock from a supplier in Japan...! What is available is the Igloo 25 qt. Contour cooler, which has handles in a different location. This Igloo 25 qt. Contour cooler is available on Amazon for ~$20. https://www.amazon.com/Igloo-Marine-Contour-Cooler-quart/dp/B01NAM1TNA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1533234063&sr=8-1&keywords=igloo+25+qt+marine+cooler Below I will describe how to modify the Igloo 25qt. Contour cooler to fit in the original receptacle on the boat. Original cooler, note UV damage near opening: http:// Contour cooler, sitting loose in receptacle: http:// Mismatch in handle location: http:// Remove old handle bracket from original cooler: http:// Install bracket only on new cooler, centered under new handle, screw holes 10.25" from bottom: http:// Finished job with new handle down: http:// New cooler in receptacle, note old style bracket engaged in receptacle: http:// Finished product: http://

    Faded blue stripe

My 2003 230SSi is in very good condition, about 660 hours. Overall the gel coat looks in good shape but the blue side stripe has started to fade. Is there anyway to restore the luster of the stripe or is replacement the only solution? Thanks in advance. Chris D

Dumb question - no air filter?

Hello everyone, I'm new to power boat ownership and am learning as I go. I bought a used 2003 230SSi with a 5.0 Mercruiser in April 2016 and after paying for maintenance at first, I am undertaking it myself this year. I'm an experienced auto mechanic who knows his way around a chevy smallblock. One of the key differences I have noticed as I plan to do maintenance work is that there is no air filter on the engine..! There is something on top of the intake called a spark arrestor, but why wouldn't Mercruiser install a proper air filter? I have always understood that one key to long engine life was a clean air filter. What is different about a boat vs. car environment that eliminates the need for this? Thanks in advance!
  5. Hi, newbie here. Purchased a one owner 230SSI with a Mercruiser 5.0 MPI and Bravo twin prop. Boat is stored on a lift on lake Keowee in SC. Planning to winterize and change fluids myself. I assume I can pump the old engine oil out through the dipstick pipe, any pump recommendations? I will treat the fuel and drain the coolant via the small blue drain caps. Should the out drive fluid be changed frequently? Thanks in advance.
