    Towing a Dinghy

Can anyone tell me the maximum speed for a Signature 330 that is still safe for towing an unmanned dinghy? This is for a 30-mile run I plan for next month.

    Signature 330 Depth Gauge

Hi everyone, My Sig 330 has a factory-installed depth gauge. I just want to know where exactly its sensor or transducer is located. Is it at the front end where it can warn me of any dangerous rocks in front of the boat? Or is it midway or near the stern? It will be a while before my boat will be hauled out so I have no way to find the sensor as of now. My Raymarine fishfinder has depth gauge but it is mounted at the transom. So I cannot rely on it to warn me if I am approaching any rocks or obstructions. Thanks for any info.

    Signature 330 Depth Gauge

I do have a fishfinder. It’s a Dragonfly 5. But since the transducer is transom-mounted, it cannot see what is ahead of the bow, which is what I actually want to see to avoid hitting rocks on shallow waters. My draft is only 3ft but there are shores in my area that are at least 10ft deep but with a sprinkiling of rocks or reefs that are 5ft or more high. Do you think a thru-hull transducer will help?

So it means it is midway from front to back. Do you know how far ahead it can detect the bottom?

    Towing a Dinghy

My boat is around 33ft long plus 3ft swim platform, total of 36ft. The slip is 35ft so I extend at least 1ft. My swim platform has 8 stainless rods supporting it. So what I plan is just to lift the 5ft wide dinghy onto the 3ft platform and support the remaining 2ft with nylon straps tied to the cleats or rails of the boat.

    Towing a Dinghy

Fantastic job you’ve done there Denny. That will have more use for me than just carrying a dinghy. Only problem is that my boat is normally docked in a 35ft slip in a marina and they will not allow no more than 3ft extensions. If I am to do my version, maybe I will use a netting material similar to those on catamarans so we can lie down on it when anchored. Just a wild idea.

    Towing a Dinghy

My Lehr 2.5hp propane motor has no built-in fuel tank but uses removable propane bottles. It is less than 40lbs in weight. My problem is where to hang it if I have to remove it from the dinghy, plus the danger of dropping it on the water every time I have to re-install it. If I could leave it on the dinghy, I may have to run below planing speed and spend more fuel, by how much, no idea. But buying additional davit system will also entail cost (maybe around $900) and will clutter the swim step.

    Towing a Dinghy

Ok. I will find a more secure way to hitch the inflatable rather than tow it. My main problem is still where to put the motor while the dinghy is sideways. If I hang the dinghy upright with the motor on it, the bouncing might be too much for the transom board to take.

    Signature 330 Holding Tank

Hi Everyone, The holding tank in my Signature 330 has a level indicator. Right after pumping out, the level indicator shows "POWER". After a few days of use, it went to 3/4. So we continued using it for a while until we were able to reach a pump out station. It was still showing 3/4 at that time we were at the pump out. But when I tried to open the cover for the discharge port, there was pressure and some of the stuff spilled out. So my question is whether my tank level indicator is faulty. Does it not show FULL or something similar? Thanks for any help.

    Towing a Dinghy

Thanks for all the replies. My dinghy is an 8ft inflatable with smooth soft bottom and 2.5hp propane ob motor. I was hoping to avoid hanging the inflatable so I don’t have to remove the motor. I still have no place to hang an outboard on my Signature. Definitely, I will raise the motor prop during the tow.

    Signature 330 Holding Tank

So far, I have no problem on odor. But I read many times about people pouring hot water and some tablespoons of yeast to help breakdown and decompose the waste, just like in septic tanks. I wonder if it really works and worth the effort.

Good to know. I was worried there might be some complication that will negatively affect the waste system. I didn’t see it in the manual. Thanks for your responses.

    Signature 330 Holding Tank

Can anyone tell me if this not OK? After pumping out, I will pour several gallons of fresh water into the holding tank thru the same discharge port and pump out again until the water is much clearer.

    Signature 330 Holding Tank

After a few weeks of observation, everything seems back to normal. Once a week, I unscrew the pump out cover slowly to check if there is any pressure in the tank. None so far. So for now, I suspect that one of my guests in the boat operated the toilet pedal too much and pressure became abnormally high in the tank. But that’s unverified. I will replace the exhaust filter soon and check if it is somewhat clogged and update you guys. Thanks for all the inputs.

Hello Iggy, Where is vent filter supposed to be located? Is it near the tank or near the exterior wall of the boat. I will try to look for it and see its status.

I always pump out when I go out since the pumps are just by the entrance of the marina. So on the average, it’s once a week with two adults using the toilet on weekends. But with this incident, I would probably use the marina bathroom more often, just for our peace of mind.

Hi Hatem, I think my system is with a separate vacuum tank. I haven’t seen the actual holding tank yet. I suspect it is down below somewhere. I will try to trace from the hoses. I could see the vacuum tank only. It’s a white tank with nothing in it but probably air. I usually turn off the vacuum and turn it on just when we use the bowl. It turns off automatically after about less than a minute. At that point, we can flush our pee at least 3 times before it needs recharging. I leave the vacuum switch on only when other people are around so as to make sure they can flush normally. I suspect the problem was with an overcharged tank, like you said. But how did it reach that point? What were the possible causes of the overcharge. Isn’t there a vent that should release excess pressure from the tank? I always make sure the holding tank is empty every time I pump out. When there is no more material coming out, I flush the bowl twice and continue pumping again. At that point, I can see that clearer water coming out. Then I flush again twice, and pump out again to see the clean water come out. That’s when I am sure the tank is really empty.

Mine has a separate vacuum generator. I can only see the vacuum generator but haven’t seen the holding tank itself.

The exhaust line was not clogged. I was able the pump everthing out. The problem was that the indicator did not say the tank was full but when I opened the cover, there was strong pressure that pushed materials out.

    Signature 330 Holding Tank

Thanks for all the replies. I will re-evaluate all the possible conditions that led to this "disaster" based on your comments. By the way, I examined the level indicator and it only has 3 indications: "POWER" means the system is active and is always on whatever is the level of stuff in the tank is, "3/4" is supposed to warn you that it is nearing full. And the last one is "DO NOT USE" which is obviously the indication that the tank is already full. I have never gone to the point where the indicator is lit at the DO NOT USE level. I always pump out when at the 3/4 indication. That's why it was a complete surprise to me when the system acted that like it was about to explode. Now, every morning, I try to open the pump out port very slowly to check if it is pressurized. So far, it is not. Will give update when something new happens. Thanks again.

Yes, I gave instructions to them and checked the bowl each time to make sure it was properly flushed.

I am pretty sure I pumped it out completely. I even had to flush the toilet twice after the flow of stuff stopped and pumped out again. The level indicator retuned to just POWER. There was heavy use after that because of some friends who visited but the indicator only went as far as 3/4. We continued use for 2 days more watching the indicator that stayed at 3/4. And that’s when I pumped out again and the spills. So my question is does the level indicator flash FULL at anytime after 3/4? Or is 3/4 the final warning?
