  1. Does anyone know if there is a way to manually release the outdrive on a Volvo Penta so it can be manually raised without using the trim pump?? Mercruiser had a release screw on their pump that you could screw out to release pressure then you could manually push the drive up... Just wondering in case trim ever failed so I could at least get loaded on trailer and back home to fix especially since they put the trim pump on the back of the transom..
  2. Hello all,This is my first time posting and trying to work on my fathers boat (and keep it out of the shop)We have what I believe is a fuel pressure issue on his 2002 Chaparral 242 Sunesta with a 5.7 GI Volvo Penta Dual Prop I/O. It just started this year after pulling out of storageSymptoms:- The engine will start no problem but can be felt chugging at low RPMS. At higher RPMs it is less noticeable but the boat is still only getting about 50% power (used to do 45mph now tops out at 25mph)- The engine responds and increases throttle but if you throw it back to idle or neutral the engine dies o
  3. Newer power boater and mom of 3 kids here (currently have a Hunter 18 sailboat, and have previously owned a 1970 C&C sailboat and a 19 foot Starcraft growing up. Family member has a 25 foot Regal, so am familiar with boats). I am looking at purchasing a 2003 215 from a marine tech guy who owns his own shop and buys project boats and flips them. The boat needs some work cosmetically (vinyl is not in great shape / I hope an easy fix with some vinyl paint, and lots of mildew spots on the cover and bikini) but I am mostly concerned about the engine and safety, as I am a single mom of thr
  4. Looking to purchase a Signature 330 around year 2016. I am wondering about motor size for a vessel this large, 300 or 350? Question #2 - Mercury or Volvo? My last question is dual prop a must? Thanks in advance
  5. Ordering a new SSX 277 and have choice of Mercruiser 8.2 380 and Volvo 6.2 380 both digital. Never been a merc fan but do seem to have some new improvements HELP
  6. I'm having trouble with my power steering (I think). The wheel is easier to turn when the boat is off. When I turn it on, it is very difficult to steer. The power steering cylinder looks a little old and the pump is original on my 2008. How can I tell if it's one vs. the other? I have plenty of power steering fluid and the pump does turn on the belt. The parts are expensive, so I don't want to replace both if I don't have to. 2008 Chaparral 276 SSX Volvo Penta 8.1 GXi Thanks, Ben
  7. I purchased a 2005 Sunesta 216 about this time last year. It is my first boat. I like it, but I have found it pounds on wakes or bigger water when the wind kicks up. I'm currently looking at a 2006 SSi 246. According to their respective spec sheets the SSi has 22 degree deadrise. The Sunesta has 16 degrees. Is this substantial enough to help cut waves better? Also, the SSi I am looking at has 450 hours on a Volvo 8.1 GXI with Duo Prop drive. Is that a lot of hours for this engine? Any known issues with this engine or drive? Thanks in advance for any guidance.
  8. How often do you flush the engines when having the boat moored in sea water? What is the best handling for this process using those blue hose connectors while in the sea?
  9. I recently purchased a 2003 Sunesta 223 with the 5.0 GXI Volvo-Penta motor. It has a Duoprop outdrive with 1.95:1 gear ratio pushing F5 props. I am seeing terrible acceleration times to plane. I usually run a full boat, 4 to 6 adults 2 to 4 kids and am getting planing times of 11 to 12 seconds. Pulling a 200 lbs. wakeboarder increases my plane time to 20, 21 seconds. I am constantly having to run wot just to get the boat to move. When pulling a tube, it takes a while to plane and I have to have the accelerator down when I turn, or I loose so much power, that the tube ends up being like a
  10. We launched our new to us Chap 310 Sig yesterday! That’s the good news The bad news is we can’t seem to clear the Volvo Penta EVC control on her. So, we are locked out of being able to see any relevant information it conveys, including how much fuel she has, RPM, etc, etc.I’m going to take a picture, but one message on the port side says “Important! See Ops manual.” (No, we don’t have the ops manual). It’s a 5.0GXiCE-M (year 2010) 21182210. Anyone have any experience with these?
  11. 2001 Sunest 233 5.7 volvo penta received an estimate to replace the alternator oem starter $400 plus labor to install seems high, does anyone have experience with this looking for insight Thanks in advance
  12. I have a 2008 276 SSX with a 8.1L GXI-J engine and a DPS-A drive. I'd like to replace it with a more modern engine. Anyone know what my options are? Do I have to get exact same engine and drive or are there other options that use same bolt pattern, etc? I'd love to put in a Mercury with bravo 3 because there are more options for service in my area. Ideally something with 350+ HP. Current is 425. thanks!
  13. Hello... I'm the happy owner of a 265 SSI 2002 model. But I feel the boat is much slower than it should be. It's powered with a Volvo 5.7 GXI which I believe is putting out 280hp. At full throttle I'm maxing about 34 on my GPS. The props are in good shape. But I'm not sure of the pitch. It's has DPS. The prior owner put a hydrofoil on the outdrive. It gets right on plane. It's been serviced by a professional mechanic every year. Anyone else with the same boat that can chime in?
  14. Help please! Newbie here and looking to purchase my first cruiser and a Chap. Essentially similarly equipped boats of the 2006 290 Signature are near me. One has Volvo-Penta 5.0 GXI-FSX 270 hp each whereas the other has the Volvo 4.3 OSi-F 220 hp each. This boat will primarily be used for day trips of 2 to 6 people and overnight / weekends with 2 to 4 people. We don't plan to do any water towing sports. Any recommendations on which is the better suited engine in this boat? Thanks so much! Once I decide and purchase I'll update the forum!
  15. Anyone have experience mooring through winter in an area with ocassional below freezing temperatures? Considering keeping our boat in a covered slip in Portland, OR through the winter. Been advised keep the outdrive down for drainage and so its in the water where temp will remain above freezing. Considering an automated heater for the engine compartment and flushing anti-freeze through the flush hose on the Volvo Penta 5.0 GXI in our 2011 206 SSI. Appreciate any thoughts!
  16. Hi, I have a newly bought '97 Chaparral 2335 Sport with a Volvo Penta 5.7 GSI that suddenly stalled on low speed. When I tried to start it again, it ran "roughly" for 4-5 seconds after a couple tries. After a few more starting attempts, I heard a loud metal on metal sound, and grinding noise - but the engine is turning, but not starting. I removed the starter and saw at least one tooth had broken off the ring wheel. The starter was replaced by the previous owner a couple seasons back. (The previous owner had used the boat for ten seasons without problems) I've sent it to the shop now, bu
  17. Hi all, I have a 2005 Volvo 5.7L GI-E (3869258) that started having some electrical problems and I was hoping for some advise. 4th of July I killed one of the two batteries while out on the water, switched to "All" to fire her back up and kept her running until we got back to the dock. The following day, same thing happened even though we had run around a bit. I went and bought a battery boost box https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B015TKUPIC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Highly recommended... before this weekends trip. Boat started fine first time, but after sitti
  18. I'm researching what to get between H2O 21 or 216 SSi and cant seem to find comparison of pros and cons for Mercury vs Volvo. From what I read it's mainly service availability for each. So, without stirring Merc vs. Volvo debate, can someone point out the main technical differences between the two? On H2O side the choice is pretty easy between Mercury 4.5L MPI 1.62 Alpha 250 HP Volvo V-6 Gen V 1.66 SX 240 HP Volvo V-6 Gen V 1.97 SX 240 HP Catalyst. I like that the new Volvos have closed freshwater cooling system but not sure if 1.66 to 1.97 ratio would warrant g
  19. Hello forum, I need help from Italy :-( Situation: Signature 240 cruise with a 5.0 gxi Volvo Penta Never had any major problem in 10yrs (usual stuff) then I left boat almost unused for an year for many reasons. Took to the sea from the lake where it was. Made it check from the local yard (put zinc for sea water and so) and it started well for a quick test just outside the marina. The day after it started well but then performance started to degrade and on the way back it was almost impossible to plane. At the yard they started to change pieces ($$$!!!) first the raw water pump, then the gasoli

  25. We are looking to buy a 2003 Sunesta 222 Volvo Penta 5.0 GXI boat, the dealer has the compression tests showing a low of 113 on one cylinder and the others are all within 137-143 range. We have been looking all over the web trying to find out what SHOULD the compression test show on a boat. We can see the range for ours but what does Volvo say the compression should be, for instance when the boat is new. The boat has 125 hours on it and is immaculate, but we can't tell if these compression numbers are even close to what they should be, much less the one that is on the low end. We can't tel
