  1. Hoping somebody has a good direct contact to get a brand new complete bravo 3 lower gear housing. Need to try and source as quickly as possible. Cost not so much an issue as will be paid for by the insurer. Any help would be fantastic!

    Bravo 3 questions

Hey all, I'm the new owner af a very well cared for 1999 Chaparral 2330 SS. 350 MPI & a Bravo 3 outdrive. I've done some research on the Bravo 3, and it seems some people love them, some hate them. I'm familiar with the corrosion issues, which won't be an issue for me, but are there any other things I should watch for, or be aware of now that I'm running a Bravo 3? All my previous experience is with outboards, or an Alpha 1. Thanks for any insight!
  3. Hey guys, brand new to the forums and to owning my first Chaparral. It's a 1999 2330 SS with a 5.7 injected small block and a Bravo 3. I did quite a lot of research and had the boat inspected prior to purchase, and it appears to be a nice family owned boat since new, allegedly still has the original upholstery and I see nothing to dissuade me from believing that. The above being said, I've read many things bashing Bravo 3's and especially concerning corrosion. I won't be keeping the boat in the water and I'm a fresh water boater, so that shouldn't be a major issue for me. Also, all sacrificial anodes are installed and in good condition. Are there any issues I should be aware of with 350 mpi and Bravo 3 combo? other than they are more expensive to maintain and repair compared to an Alpha) Thanks all and I look forward to getting the boat in the water soon! (I'm currently having all fluids and impeller changed and one more once over of the mechanicals and electronics before I get her wet!) Thanks again!

    Chaparral 255 SSI

Hi Folks, Picking our first boat on the 9th of June and can't wait our summer to begin..........it's been a little cold and grey here in Atlantic Canada but we're hoping for a warm summer. We decided on a 2006 Chaparral 255 ssi with 496 (140 hours) and I'm very happy with our choice. I joined the forum last night but was reading comments and getting pictures from the many owners on it. Just wanted to say hi and let you all know you have a new Chaparral family! Pics to follow....... Marc

    1996 Sig 250 Bravo 3 Hydraulic ilnes

First Chaparral. First I/O. First boat over 20ft. Anyone have any experience changing the braided hydraulic lines on a Bravo 3? It looks fairly simple which scares me. Thanks, Jeff
  6. Hey fellow mariners - the other night the Admiral and I stayed out late to watch the Blue Moon rise on the Tennessee...SPECTACULAR. We had the river completely to ourselves for the 12 mile haul back to the ramp and it was as still as a millpond. I'm cruising at about 17-19 MPH / 2000-2500 RPM with trim tabs fully deployed to stay on plane and stable. I began to notice the very slightest sound of surging vibration. At first I thought it was due to having the lower unit trimmed all the way in so I bumped trim out slightly just to get it off the transom and thought it disappeared but after a minute or so I noticed it slowly cycling back in. Next I bumped up speed to about 3000 RPM/26 MPH (we were retracing our track we had just followed a half hour earlier to get to our viewing spot so I wasn't too worried about the speed) and sure enough I could hear the same kind of ever so slight surging at a slight higher repetition, then the same pattern back down at 2000-2200 RPM again - that makes me think it is drivetrain oriented. It's nothing I notice during daylight cruising where there is plenty of noise and chop on the water that is keeping things from settling into any kind of rhythm, just in the hyper peace and calm of totally smooth water and the silence of nighttime navigation. I'm tending to think it is something to chase down in my end-of-season maintenance at the local dealer but the Admiral and I are planning a 260 mile round-trip jaunt from Huntsville to Chattanooga in a couple of weeks and this is something I haven't noticed until now. I was already planning to have an engine-outdrive alignment check as part of my decommissioning package in September. Any speculation on this?

Bravo 3 Hits Hard Going into Gear

Have a 2000 240ssi with the 7.4mpi and Bravo 3. Shift cable, outdrive service, u joints, bellows... were all done this year. Shifting was extremely quiet & smooth, but it hesitated for 3 or 4 seconds going into reverse. Had the cone clutch, shift fork, and bearings replaced. There is no more hesitation going into reverse. Shifting into forward and reverse is instantaneouse, but it shifts into gear very hard. I almost feel bad putting it into gear sometimes. Didn't realize how bad it actually was until my friend was docking it for my while I was on the floater and I could hear it from 15 feet away go into gear. RPM are just over 600 or 650 or so. Any thoughts, recommendations, or similar experiences after a cone clutch replacement?

    Changing Bravo 3 anodes underwater

When we finally got out on (rather in) the lake again this weekend, I used my son's mask to inspect the outdrive. To my horror, I found the anodes are almost completely gone!! They are a year old, and the reason the went so quickly is because I installed Magnesium anodes which protect better, but dissolve faster. Boat is scheduled to be hauled out either this week or next. But that has been the case since April! I'm getting a little frustrated and a lot nervous about the anode situation. I know it's not easy, but can the anodes be changed in the water? At least the prop anode and the trim bars? I have a set of aluminum anodes, but have been waiting for haul out. How important is it to get these things on immediately versus waiting a couple or three weeks?

    Need a new outdrive

Hello everyone! Im new to the board and am in need of some help. While taking my 1994 24ft chaparral out for the first time this year, the outdrive locked up on me. Once we got it out of the water and had my mechanic look at it, we determined that there was an unknown crack in the foot of the outdrive that allowed all of the oil to drain out, running it dry. He determined that the entire outdrive needs to be replaced (foot cracked, gears destroyed). We currently have a twin prop bravo three outdrive, and that what we want to replace it with. My question is this: where can I order a new outdrive online for a decent price? Any and all suggestions will be appreciated. TJ

    Bravo III lower unit replacement

After a run-in with a fresh-water metal eating shark yesterday, I am going have to replace my props and lower unit on my Bravo 3. Found a good deal on a replacement lower unit and SS prop set. Does anyone have access to or knows of a site that shows what needs to be done to swap the lower stern drive unit without removing the entire sterndrive from the hull? I just want to make sure I am not missing any steps, (i.e. seal replacenment, gear oil draining, etc.) Thanks in advance.....
