  1. I noticed the paint on top of my Port intermediate pipe was no longer smooth but scorched looking (see pic #1 for a comparison between port and STDB pipes). The engine temps have never run hot, so I wasn’t overly concerned, but decided to pull the elbow and have a look. The elbow looked OK and I pulled the STDB side to have a look, too. (See another post I made about the impeller loosing a fin and I found it/them partially blocking the oil cooler; therefore, reducing cooling water flow volume.) The elbow scorched paint could be a result of reduced water flow volume caused by the broken impeller clogging the cooling system? Here’s my dilemma. The SELOC Manual, and other places I have read, say to be sure and not score the mount surface of the elbow and exhaust manifolds and they should not be worn/deteriorated/corroded because it should have a smooth mounting surface so as not allow water to enter the exhaust chamber and possibly causing Hydro-lock. Take a look at the bottom side of the elbows and it looks like maybe corrosion has taken place? Or is that just casting imperfections? There’s not much cast iron in the “Not Uniform” picture! So, am I due for a new elbow? Or is that just casting imperfection? Also, the wall of the Intermediate pipe is 50% thinner on the top than bottom. Is that casting imperfection or just fair wear and tear?? note: can’t post pics over 51kB, so I gotta figure out how then I’ll post the other pics.

    SPN 926 FMI 5

Hello, I've been getting alarms on my SSI 226 with a V6 280 Volvo Penta. I'm on a waiting list to get it into the shop (semi remote area). I am getting an SPN 926 FMI 5 and haven't any luck finding a code list for this. I did find that my impeller was badly chewed up. I replaced it and removed a handful of rubber and a small pebble from the heat exchanger. Continues to alarm. Temperature is fine. Oil pressure is good. Any ideas on the alarm or the code? Thanks.
  3. I just acquired a 1996 Chaparral 1930 SSI Limited Edition with sport seating and a 5.8L EFI OMC Volvo Duo Prop motor. Great little boat. However, it has started to shutter / shake upon starting. It doesn't happen all the time, about ever 3rd start. When it does it shakes the steering wheel and drive back and forth for about 5 or so seconds then settles down and everything seems to be great. I have replicated this out of the water as well as in the water. Someone, I spoke with, said it is related to the power steering. I have changed the fluid by sucking it out of the reservoir and adding new fluid. I have done this a couple of times trying to get most of the older fluid out. The fluid coming out is in good shape and doesn't look bad. More history. The boat hasn't been on the water in the past couple of years. It has been stored indoors. I also don't see any fluid leaking out anywhere. Thoughts? Any suggestions or help on solving this annoying issue would be great.
  4. Hello All! My Chaparral H2019 Sport with a Volvo Penta V6-200-SX rough idles and stalls. Out of the water she gets up to 5000 RPM, but in the water she goes up onlyto 2000 RPM and when in idle she stalls and turns off. The Alarm beeps every minute or so. The boat has only 29 hours of operation but has been stored for long periods of time. I drained all the fuel in the tank, changed the fuel filter two times, and checked the spark plugs. What would be the next step? I would Appreciate any help.
  5. I have a 2016 SIG270 with Volvo Penta dual prop. Today, while working on boat we noticed a definite electric current in the prop when touched. The boat had main engine and house batteries ON, but the boat was out of the water on it's lift. We were in water standing on sandy bottom. Is it normal for there to be an electric current in the props and outdrive? We turned main engine and house batteries OFF, and electric current stopped. Normally we store boat out of water on lift with all batteries OFF. Is the small electric current part of the corrosion protection system? All the anodes on boat are in good condition. Thanks, Joe
  6. 2010 Signature 310 with twin 270 Volvo Penta 5.0 GXiCE-M Dual Prop (Model A 120563) I’m looking to order new props (long story.....) and minimize the down time, but can’t get the part number off the prop (murky waters). I’m 2nd owner. Original dealer says they can’t help me. Local dealer says same story. The best picture I have when she was on blocks is attached. Wish I would have taken a close up of that prop part. Any experts willing to weigh in?
  7. Got a good tip from a VP trained mechanic based on factory specs. The easiest way to time the VP duoprops: - notice that each prop has a type and model number stamped on a hub, - set the props such way that one prop marking is on 12 o'clock, another prop marking is on 6 o'clock, - basically a 180 degree offset. This also confirms that the VP douprop timing is a part of factory specification ... not just an urban legend.
  8. Hello All, Seems simple, but I have an 09 Chap 256ssi 5.7GXI-J Volvo Penta. Looking to purchase a corsa silent choice kit. Found the Corsa kit# 83924 in the Chap manual and also confirmed that with Corsa. Corsa wants over 3K deer for the kit. Only found 1 other vendor that will sell me this specific kit and they want 2.8K deer. All other comparable kits that consist of basically the same diverters, hoses, and tips are around 1.5-1.8K deer. I realize some of these components in various kits are different, but the concepts are the same. Trying to figure out why Corsa wants so much for this specific kit. Corsa can't tell me a good reason why its so high. Talking with them has been like talking to a wall. Don't mind spending 1.5K deer for what I think is reasonable. Double that is a little crazy. Has anyone attempted the same thing for 256's? Any luck using another kit and retrofitting? Any help would be much appreciated.
  9. Volvo Penta 5.0 GXI, 2011 206 SSI. I had an alarm go off and red alarm light came on when I accelerated past about 3800 RPM. Yellow check engine light did not come on. Kicked throttle back to neutral and alarm stopped immediately and light turned off. Ran it up to 3500 rpm's and alarm did not go off again, but I was hesitant to push the RPM's past that for fear of setting the alarm back off. Any thoughts on causes before I drag it in for an engine scan? I asked my mechanic and he said might be nothing, keep running it and see if it happens again. Thanks everyone!
  10. I Have a 2007 256ssi with an 8.1 Gi Volvo Penta. This last weekend the boat would start idling fast 1200-1400 rpm. If i killed the ignition it would start and idle fine for for a few ski runs then creep back up. I also had it do a run away rev and could not get it to slow down even when the throttle pulled back to the no wake slot. I could not get it to go in the neutral slot. I thought it to be a cable issue at first but now think it might be a computer module. I did replace the fuel pump earlier this year. Any help would be appreciated.
  11. Hey all, I have a Volvo Penta 5.7 GXI and I think I have a pin hole leak in the oil pan next to the drain plug. I know it will me hard, but can I replace the pan with out pulling the motor? Any help would be welcome, I just might not like the answer....
  12. We have an inboard outboard Volvo penta motor. The shifter will not shift into forward or reverse. If you press the neutral button, the shifter will move. Any suggestions?
  13. Hello somebody has a used XPD-B Drive Ratio 1.96 where the housing is ok? Live in the Dominican Republic and here i get zero. Or somebody knows where i can get one. Thanks a lot greetings
  14. So a few weeks back I took my daughter out for the first ride of the season. We had a great 40 min ride and got to Back Creek to anchor. I throttled back to idle and heard a mechanical sound. Huh oh. I opened the hatch and listened and I couldn't hear it as well. Which is good news as if something has to have a problem I'd much rather it not be the engine. I baby'ed it on the way back & went straight home. That week my marina mechanic looked into it and he confirmed it's the outdrive. I've contacted the marina I've purchased the boat from (they asked my local guy to pull it and inspect it). Long story short there is water in the (bellows?) and the gimbal bearing is what was making the noise. I'll keep you posted on how it plays out.
  15. Just found this VP 2010 engine/drive parts catalog and cross reference ... could help the D-I-Yourselfers. http://www.volvopenta.com/SiteCollectionDocuments/VPC/Market%20sites/China/%E8%88%B9%E6%9C%BA%E5%8F%91%E5%8A%A8%E6%9C%BA%E9%9B%B6%E4%BB%B6%E9%80%9F%E6%9F%A5%E6%89%8B%E5%86%8C.pdf The PDF doc is named using Chinese characters but it is on the legit VP site ... just rename it after downloading.
  16. For VP engines owners ... a must read for this winter. You will find something you didn't know you need ... VP OEM Accessories and Maintenance Parts 2014 Catalog (PDF) ... http://www.volvopenta.com/SiteCollectionDocuments/Penta/Misc/Parts%20and%20Accessories.pdf
  17. I have a 2005 Chaparral 256 SSi with a Volvo Penta engine. The boat has only about 200 hours on it. I am considering relocating the boat to south Florida Page 6-3 of the manual warns, "Operating your boat in salt water is classified excessive use". So, can this boat run in salt water? Will it destruct in 50 hours? I expect to put less than 50 hours a year on the boat in Florida. If it lasted another 500 hours, I would be happy. The boat will be stored on a lift. If I flush it out after each use, will severe damage still occur? I read something about a Nutri Salt system. Is this closed loop cooling? Is there any modification that will extend the life of the boat? I would appreciate any advice about operating in salt water.
  18. I am replacing my chaparral that had a bravo one. boat I am looking at has a Volvo penta outdrive with a 5.7 vortec . any insight, problems with this outdrive?
  19. This is the unverified info I have received in my inbox from Marine Parts Express. Hope this can help somebody ... _____________________________________________ The Volvo Penta XDP Upgrade Program has been Extended Through 12/31/14 Recently, Volvo Penta announced the launch of the XDP Upgrade Program that affects all registered Volvo Penta XDP owners. The price for these upgrades is about $4,000 less than the normal price. The Upgrade Program has a fairly complicated procedure for taking advantage of the offer, but we are here to help you throughout this process. Please call us toll-free at 1-877-621-2628 to take advantage of this effective and reasonably priced way to obtain a more dependable drive. _____________________________________________ BTW, it should say XDP not XDPS in the title.
  20. I have a Chaparral 190 ssi with a volvo penta 4.3 liter v6. I am having to raplace the outdrive, because of a gear oil leak which resulted in a locked up outdrive. my current outdrive is a volvo sx. I have a friend who has a volvo dp outdrive. Does anyone know if the outdrives are compatible? Can I use the DP outdrive on my boat? Please let me know if you need more information. Thanks.
  21. Any '89 2350 SX owners out there ever have an issue with trim cylinders and need to replace either the hoses or full cylinder kits for the upgraded version? Motor is the A231Q with duoprop Volvo Penta Outdrive.. Marina is telling me that I would have to pull the motor (and outdrive) in order to gain access to do the job - does anybody know if this is accurate? Marina is a reputable and certified Volvo Penta repair facility, I just need a sanity check here before I move forward with repair. I paid for the boat, (boat is in great condition) the repair estimate is - JUST TO REPLACE / REPAIR the trim cylinders!!! Somebody please help me out with this
  22. Big oops. Tried to winterize myself. Thought I followed directions to the letter. However, first time out, engine ran great but bilge was running after we stopped. Saw that water flowing in from the engine. Diagnosis is a cracked block. $8K estimate. This is very embarrassing but was wondering if anyone else would admit to this. How did it turn out? What are some of the questions I should ask the mechanic? Thanks.
