Propeller

Just bought boat new (215ssi) in May 2010, when I brought the boat for winterization dealer suggested to send out propeller to be resurfaced. I wasn't sure if it was worth it but agreed anyway, it cost about 150.00 including removal and hub, any opinions on this ?

Well is it a Single, or Dual Prop? Aluminum or Stailess Steel? Did it have any dings or gouges in it?

When I had a Alpha Drive using an aluminum prop. I would replace it every-other year cause the small dings it would get in it. 30-40 bucks per-blade to repair vs 130 bucks to replace, keep the old one for spare. When I had three, I would sell the old one on ebay for 20-30 bucks.

It's a single aluminum prop, it wasn't clean, hit some low water in the NJ bays, scratched but not bad. Dealer explained that boat performance would decrease as the prop deteriorated and it sounded reasonable.

Prop condition does have a big affect on performance and efficency, so it's important to be maintained.

A new prop with hub kit for a Merc application would cost a little more than what your dealer is charging.

But they're sending the prop out and performing some labor, so it sounds pretty normal. B)

I would get a new one and install it. Then take old one and just touch up the rough parts with a file or Dremmel to smooth them out and sharpen the edges and then paint it up and have a decent spare. That way, if you kabong your prop, you could do a "field replacement" and get home on the cheap..... Just my opinion on what I would do.

Definitely get a new prop and clean up and save the old one as a spare. I don't know what engine and outdrive you have in your 215, or how you use your boat, but my 2010 215 with the Volvo 4.3 performs decently with the standard Volvo 4 blade alum prop (and the new price for an alum prop is only about 100 deer more than your repair price).

There are also some very good high performance stainless steel props out there that would be worth considering if you want to squeeze out some more performance although many more deer. If you consider changing the prop type, it's best to test various models, if you have a dealer that lets you test props. Prop performance varies depending on the boat they're used on.

Get a new prop, keep the old one as a spare. Before buying the new prop, decide if the performance of the existing prop is what you want. Does it get close to the recommended RPM at WOT?
