Bad luck to change boat name?

Recommended Posts

I've heard that it's bad luck to change the name of a boat, but I took the chance, anyway. The previous name was dumb. Moku Aloha means "love boat" and/or "love island" in Hawaiian. Has anyone had bad luck after changing the name of a used boat?

YES, horrible bad luck. It was so bad we sold the boat. Do the ceremony for the love of G0d man. You don't want the wrath of the sea gods to descend upon you. I'll start praying for you now pray.gif

If you change the name of your boat you will have bad luck and spend large sums of money on boat repairs. If you keep the old name you will have bad luck and spend large sums of money on boat repairs. Go ahead and change the boat name so at least you like the name while spending large sums of money.

Hahaha, that's funny (and true!). We "un-named" our boat after doing the un-naming ceremony, but since we can't decide on a new name, it has no name at this point. We just knew we didn't want "bob-n-around"! And before un-naming it, we spent about 10 very large herds of deer on repairs within 6 months of buying the boat. We figured our luck couldn't get worse!

Okay, as far as the ceremony is concerned, I thnk I'll not do it, and say I did. But I definitely will get a third fender for the stern!

This is so true.

Had really bad luck. A storm picked up the whole boat house and flipped it over with 12 boats. Totaled my 06 280 Sea Ray. Only had it for a little over a year.

I went through the ceremony when I renamed mine. It went like this...

1. Drink a beer

2. Peel off the old name

3. Drink another beer

4. Clean the area

5. hmm... one more beer can't hurt...

6. Put on the new name

7. Looks great! Time to celebrate! Someone hand me a beer!

End of Renaming Ceremony.

OK, nowhere do I see any mention of naming a boat that was nameless by the previous owner.

But, just in case, I did drink several beers....

Lets see if I get this correct. If you don't do the renaming ceremony, your boat gets wrecked and you get a new and bigger one to name the correct way. Got It!!

It would seem that way. Did not set out to buy a bigger boat, but the wife saw it at the summer boat show and it followed us home. I think she started to move stuff into the cabin while it was still at the boat show. Could not get her over to look at the same size Sea Ray that we had. (Lucky Me!)

Well, we're taking the boat on its first real vacation with us to Lake Nacimiento on Monday. If anything unlucky happens to us during the week, I will know that it is because I failed to perform the holy name-change ceremony. Lol

Honestly, I would do the ceremony. We didn't, and have put 2 engines, 2 drives, and a lot of other money into ours. the ceremony doesn't take long, and if its the alcohol issue, you can always use sparkling cider.

TXTWIN - I think your bad luck was buying that particular boat....OUCH. The renaming of our boat only left the ghost of the previous name on the stern....Haunted??

They're like RVs. Always wanting one just a little bigger.

Sounds like a cialis commercial to me....

:hehe:

Sorry, difficult to just let it not be said....
