Ford Re-enters the marine market

Recommended Posts

Splitting off another thread (didn't want to hijack the large SUV thread any more than we already had).....

Looks like Ford did make a decision to re-enter the marine market after all. I knew they were the basis of the PCM engines that were in Nautiques for many years but ironically when they left the market GM started making the blocks for PCM -- weird.

Found this article from Fall 2013 announcing Ford taking the Raptor 6.2 liter to the water with Indmar for inboards. Makes me wonder if they will get into I/O packages at some point....

Since GM engine technology changes Mercury Marine has begun to design and manufacture its own engines. The 8.2 MAG is the first engine completely dedicated to Mercury’s own design and its exclusive use.

The only item purchased from GM is the bare 8.2L cast iron block which has an exclusive cylinder honing process owned by Mercury.

My understanding is they will eventually use the same process on all their engines over time and they are starting with the top and working down.

yes, I've read that too. The new 8.2 is also the base for the new Mercury Racing 520 which is a high performance version of the 8.2. Nice engine! Mercury Racing also has the new 565 which, I believe, is all new. Not positive about that though.
