Anyone traveling to Bimini the week of 3/23/2015 from Miami? I have never made the crossing, so I'm wondering if there are any groups planning to cross at that time. I've been told it's better to go in a group. I have a Signature 310, which I understand is big enough to cross the Gulf Stream.

I won't and haven't done it yet either but it's most certainly on my bucket list for the near future. A lot of people do it now in 25ft center consoles even. If you're well prepared and have a good plan set with emergency contingencies in place, you'll be more than fine in that beautiful Sig 310. Love that boat, of any year too.

I'm sure you've done a lot of research already but here's a pretty good breakdown article from BoatU.S. that gives some pretty good, basic pointers about speed and time and mileage to get there. Also about anchoring and it warns that once you get there, be ready that there isn't much, if any, aids to navigation so you're on your own in that respect. But that's a great trip with family and friends for a few days it's like temporarily going to heaven. :)

Funny, I just came across this unusual but practical advice ...

I've been crossing to the Bahamas for 30 years and let me give you a piece of advise. Of course you'll check the weather and sea state before you go, but I find that roughly 50/50 accurate.

Here's the trick I use. No matter what the weather says, go to the Beach before you go and look at the horizon. If you see elephants marching on the horizon (figuratively speaking), don't go! Unless you like having someone punch you in the stomach the whole way. If you see a smooth horizon (looking east towards the Bahamas) go quick.

Are you staying down there for that entire week or just a day? As I understand it It's pretty much a straight and relatively short shot from Miami to Bimini. We see A LOT of traffic coming out of all those many inlets in Miami (mostly fancy cruisers and flybridges with tenders and/or jet skis on the SP) and you can tell they're heading straight out there. You can actually watch them disappear as they B-line straight eastward over the horizon lol.

Don't forget your fishing rods.

I did it two years ago in my 310.

Easy trip, not much to do in Bimini.

Snorkel the sapona and anchor at honeymoon harbor

I wouldn't go until summer in any boat...and I would never go alone. Summer is the time to go! November-April is/ can be very rough...I'm talking possible 7-12 ft. seas on bad days when the wind kicks up over 25-30 mph. I haven't seen these in person, but have heard stories and have seen the weather reports down here. In the summer though, I would take my 2130 if I was in a group of boats with experienced captains! People have done it in pontoon boats, jet boats, whalers, jet skis, and jon boats.

I've been to the Abacos and Port Lucaya on couple of trips; one pretty easy and one not.

Headed to Bimini this June so looking for easy 50 mile crossing- couple hours from Ft. Lauderdale.

Jeff- they just opened a casino recently in Alice Town,

Any new place is an adventure.
