Tachometer -- Drifts upward while engine running is set

5 posts in this topic

Any one know if this is a common problem ?

Engine is running at same speed and not rev'ing up but the tachometer drift upward.

Example. Tach is showing 3000 and then can drift up to 3500 or 4000. Sometimes it will bounce up to 6000 and back quickly.

Is it electrical ? Is it vacuum controlled ? Can it be fixed ?

If your boat is 2008 or older. Look on the back of the tach, you can turn the tach switch back and forth. This should clean the corrosion off of the contacts.

Is there a switch on the tach or are you referring to the plug in contacts ?

Also -- would I be recommended to use an Electrical Contact Cleaner spray on these contacts ?

Yes there is a rotating switch. Use a flat head screw driver. Small amount of cleaner may help too
