Propeller replacement / reconditioning for 2010 Sunesta 284

Recommended Posts

I have a 2010 Sunesta 284 with 295 hours. Boat is used during summer boating season in NJ (late May - early Oct). The marina that stores my boat in the winter just sent me a service estimate to recondition my prop ($375). I did not inspect my prop, which is the original that came with the boat when I purchased it new. First, is this a fair price? Should I replace the prop vs have it reconditioned? How can I tell if it is in need of repair? Not sure of the cost and whether their estimate is fair. Thoughts?

Why did they send you a estimate to have the prop reconditioned? Did you hit something over the summer? Is it out of balance?

The prop should not need any servicing unless you hit something.

You can go to this Mercury Website to get an estimate on new props. Reconditioning cost I have no idea. Also no idea on Volvo props.

What sterndrive do you have? Volvo SX or DP? Merc alpha1 , Bravo1, B2, or BIII ??

The answer will tell us what to do for you, and if estimate is out of line.

They sent an estimate without providing details. I've seen this before with this marina. They put estimates out there hoping a customer will bite. I'm trying to get them to provide details on the reason for the suggested reconditioning.

Well, you need the marina info first. Since it's a DP, then you need to know if 375 deer covers both front and rear props.

If so, 375 is very fair for total recondition.

The Merc site for an estimate is now not viable.

If there is damage to either prop, then this is a good time of year to have them worked on. It also depends on who will do the work, and what they will do. Could also be a profit-maker for the marina. I had my B3 props polished, balanced and blueprinted for about that much $$$. Noticeable difference.

Go look at the prop. If the front prop is bent a lot more than the rear ? Possible strike. If both are severely bent ? or the bent edges are looking like they hit concrete ? I get suspicious that they accidently or deliberately bent it. Also take a flashlight to crawl under the boat to look for a mark on the front of the prop housing. Paint chipped or gouged. Possible strike.

Lastly look at the entire bottom. Scuff marks. Crushed sharp edges of the bottom ? Old crushed fiberglass strands will have mold colors started.

Dropped WILL look like very jagged strands of fiberglass sticking out. Also look new to anyone.

A single Alpha is $ 50 to $ 60 where I boat Price around if only the props are damaged. I forget...........................$150 at my prop shop. The 3rd $ 50 is labor to take them off & on.

Wingnut or some other person can tell you what the 5 year worn color of your props should be. If the 2 props are different in color ? I would be suspicious of a change. Check the prop numbers cast into them . I just have a bad feeling. Probably O K.

Hey Brick, tried sending you a PM, but it said your box was full...

Can you tell me who you had do your prop balance/polish? I've got some damage and want to find the best place to send them.

If anyone else has any suggestions, I'm open.

Thanks

if 375 is for DP covering both props that's probably a good deal considering stainless. I mean that's less than 200 per. I had twins and slightly dinged them up, to clean them up, re-pitch,balance, and polish, it was a $400 job, my buddy own the business so it was free. So factoring in a tune up, and minor repair, I would think that's a good price.

1. The marina that stores my boat in the winter just sent me a service estimate to recondition my prop ($375).

2. I did not inspect my prop, which is the original that came with the boat when I purchased it new.

3. First, is this a fair price? Should I replace the prop vs have it reconditioned? How can I tell if it is in need of repair? Not sure of the cost and whether their estimate is fair.

FWIW, and as stated or implied already ...

1. They are looking for a fool unless the quote came with a diagnosis supported with pictures. At best it's a case of upselling.

2. That is the source of your perplexity ... you should have inspected not only the props but the entire boat when it was taken out of water in fall. IMO ... you have delegated too much to the marina which might want to take an advantage of your ignorance.

3. You have no info nor there is any data to say what needs to be done and how much that should cost. Also, see 1 and 2 above.

I`d go take a look at it personally or have a knowledgeable friend look at it. Unless there is obvious visible damage keep your money and put it towards something else.

Bronson Hill Propellers in Santa Ana CF did my B3 props. But I don't think they are still in business. My props were balanced, blueprinted and polished. They had no prior damage. Cost was about $500 for the pair.

I just had my Staineless Steel Duoprops from my Volvo DPS drive refinished by PropMD.com. My props had a few nicks and some scratches but no bends. They normally charged $295 for the pair including shipping both ways (emailed me a shipping label) but I used their Facebook promotion for 10% off that price in February. The price includes repair and polishing. They look great. I don't have an "after" picture yet but will try to post soon.

Here is a before picture:

If that is what the OP really needs, I would recommend PropMD.com as well … VP duo prop for $295 shipped (two years ago).

Just checked out propmd. Looks like a very good deal. Had my bravo 3's done local once, 425 and they weren't really bad. I'll try them next.

My B3 props don't need any repair since they are new but I sure do like the shinny look. I see they will polish the set for $185 with shipping....I'm going have to seriously consider this.
