OBD?

Recommended Posts

I apologize for this question, but I am a car guy. Is there an OBD port for each engine and where is it located? Type of plug?

Wouldn't that be nice. The quick answer is no as GM uses OBD Marine on some of their offerings which is special, and both Merc and Volvo have their own. If you buy the Merc Scan Tool with the latest software it will work on both Merc and Volvo, provided you also purchase the proper pigtail for your specific ECM. See Rinda link below.

Well that's disappointing, I have some really good scan tools that's I won't be using on the boat.

Get your marina buddies to go in on a shared tool. Pays for itself first time you need it. W

OBD simply stands for On Board Diagnostic and is a generic term. So, if the engine is controlled by an ECM, then it likely has an OBD connector of some type. Wont look like a GM, ford, dodge or toyota or the standardized 96 and up OBDII, but it will be an OBD connector of some type. An automotive diagnostic machine or code reader will not work. You need the proper connector and software package.
