Noise when hand-turning prop shaft VP SX-A

10 posts in this topic

Hi folks,

Near the end of this boating season, while travelling at speed, I thought I heard a ringing noise.  Now that the boat is out of the water, I notice when I hand-turn the prop it makes a ringing noise.  The gear oil was in good shape.  This is a 2012 VP 4.3GXi with the SX-A outdrive.  I'm guessing this is a bearing problem.  Anyone else experience this?

John

What parts & how are they making the noise ?   None of my stern drives ever make any sounds when rotating the prop in either direction. Alpha 1 drives.  New or 200 hours & 14 years old.

My Alpha clicks if you turn the prop and the shifter happens to be in gear. If it's in neutral, dead quiet.

It should only click, if in gear, by spinning the prop in reverse of the selected gear. If turning in conjunction with the selected gear, F or R, you would be turning against the engine compression which is unlikely.
