chaparral Vrx 223 or 243 info

Recommended Posts

I am looking for some info on chaparrals new jet boats.  does anyone who owns one of these boats like it?,  how fast do they go,  are they noisy,  can you actually surf behind them,  really any info would be great.  have a beautiful 2013 226 ssi but the kids want to surf now.

Plenty of info on this site regarding trying to get satisfactory surfing wakes from these models.  I'll save you some time; don't buy a jet boat for its surf wake capabilities.

The earlier ones are quite noisy but from 2016 on, they were better. If you look at the 223 you’ll want twin rotax 200’s, the 243 is better with the twin 250’s - as for speed, they are very, very quick to plane and onwards to well past 50mph.

I used to have the 223vr with twin 200’s but have more recently moved on to a 246ssi with mercruiser 6.2, I don’t do any surfing so for me in coastal waters this is a much better boat but I really do miss that acceleration.

For skiing they are excellent boats, for surfing well... best to say the jury is out - you should look at one with ballast tanks and the aerial surf platform fitted which helps shape the wake but in all honesty I don't think you’ll be that impressed after your 216 - try one first is a definite.

If you are buying a boat to surf behind, a jet boat is just about your worst option.  Look at a FFD stern drive(Chaparral makes a stern drive surf boat) if you don’t want an inboard.
