1993 24 SIGNATURE CHAPARRAL 5.7 MERCRUISER

Recommended Posts

HEY EVERYBODY. I HAVE A 1993 5.7 CARBED MERCRUISER IN A 24 CHAPARRAL  I AM THINKING ABOUT CONVERTING TO FUEL INJECTION. HAS ANYBODY PERFORMED THIS CONVERSION ON A SIMULAR SIZE BOAT? IN PARTICULAR, I AM INTERSETED IN THE FUEL MILAGE  DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CARBED AND FUEL INJECTION.  ALSO, WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHO MANUFACTURED YOUR CONVERSION KIT. AS OF NOW WHEN I SHUT DOWN THE MOTOR IT WILL RESTART FINE IN THE FIRST TWO OR THREE MINUTES.  AFTER THAT IT WILL CRANK OVER FOR ABOUT 30 - 45 SECONDS BEFORE REFIRING. I HAVE TRIED PUMPING THE THROTTLE, PUSHING IT UP JUST A LITTLE, AND PUSHING THE THROTTLE TO  WIDE OPEN, STILL DOES THE SAME THING. THIS HAPPENS AT BOTH COLD START AND WHEN WARMED UP. AFTER SHE FIRES UP SHE RUNS LIKE A DREAM. PLUGS, FILTERS, CAP AND ROTOR ARE ALL NEW. I REPLACE EVERY YEAR BECAUSE IT MAKES ME FEEL BETTER. I AM THINKING THE CARB IS LOOSING FUEL AND HAS TOO CRANK AWHILE TO REFILL THE BOWL???  IS IT  EVEN POSSIBLE FOR THE BOWL TO SIPHON BACK TO THE TANK? ANY INPUT WOULD BE APPRECIATED.   THANKS TO ALL  IN ADVANCE.

Your issue with re-start is likely a vapor lock situation. Merc has a bulletin out on this, #99-7.  Do a search for details or send me a PM with a valid e-mail address and I'll send you a PDF attachment.  As far as economy, you will see next to zero improvement. Drive-ability will improve, but not as much as you would think. At the cost of the conversion, it would not seem cost effective, as you cant use an automotive based system as it is not intrinsically safe. Marine EFI systems use water cooled, tandem fuel pumps and no return line to the fuel tank. Get your carb straight, cure the vapor lock situation, and you will should be quite pleased.  W

Have the choke checked & reset correctly

More importantly. Replace the carburetor accelerator pump piston assembly. It should be worn out by now. It might also need to be  adjusted.  If the engine runs great at all higher speeds ?  DO NOT let anyone sell you a rebuilt carb. They can & have been terrible sometimes..... I go with wingnut on the hot restart could be a vapor locking.

What brand & grade of gasoline ?  Any Ethanol in it ? Gas station ?  Or marina  gas ? All my vapor lock and after running with the key turned off ended with a good marine gas station that fills yachts. They do small boats also.        Find that hard start problem or a new marine starter will find you.

Have your engine water temperature checked with a infrared  gun. Sticky thermostat  can boil off gasoline.
