VP Sterndrive Gear Oil

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have a alternate recommendation for 75W 90 gear oil ??? ,,,... I just tried to buy some VP synthetic and nearly hit the floor when they said $20 a quart.

Wouldnt any automotive syn gear oil at that weight work ??

Jed Clampet’s Texas Tea wasn’t worth that much ...lol

As always, thanks for your help.

Bill

How many quarts does it take? Use what is recommended in the owners manual.

Amsoil is acceptable. It meets all of Volvo’s requirements, in fact they made it for VP at one time and may still do. It is hydroscopic and can tolerate up to 10% water intrusion. It’s only about $12/qt. Mercury HP is only certified GL4, Volvo specifies GL5, which Amsoil is.

Look in your owner's manual for the recommended weight and rating to find a gear lube that will work.  Mobil one 75w90 synthetic GL5 will usually do the trick.  I don't know how much you will save over volvo oil, but it is only one a year, right?

Both the Volvo and Merc HP lubes have a friction modifier included which helps the cone clutches used in the dual prop drives lock up properly. I had twin Alpha drives with dog clutches on a 30' Sea Ray and used the Mobil 1 75w-90 exclusively for well over 1,000 hours without issue, however I would never use it in a cone clutch drive. I buy 2-1/2 gallon containers of the Merc HP lube on Amazon for 112.

The merc stuff is usually between 9-15 bucks. I never pay more than 11 or so for it.  Actually Walmart had it around here for 9.99 the other day.

The Walmart here only sells the Merc "Premium Lube", which IMHO is total crapola and is not recommended by Merc for the Bravos. Alphas only.   Be sure your offering is the HP Lube.  W

I found if you go to the oil section in Walmart they only have the reg oil. In ours if you go to the boat section they have the hp oil. Weird
