Gear lube for alpha drive.

Recommended Posts

Anyone found an oil that is not merc but equivalent for the gear lube? A full synthetic maybe?

Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube, I wouldn't use anything that is not formulated for Merc.    Walmart carries it.

Marine gear oils have an emulsifier added that causes the oil and water to mix in the event of a leak. Gives the entire drive some level of lubrication until the owner realizes he has a problem. Conventional gear oils have de-mulsifiers that cause the water to drop out into the bottom of the gear box until it can be drained out. The problem with an out drive is, the lowest thing in the drive is the output shaft bearings and final drive gears, not a collection sump. In the case of an Alpha, that also includes the dog clutch assembly. Stick with the Merc HP lube and you won't be sorry. If the per quart price scares you off, order the 2-1/2 gallon bulk containers online. Just be sure it's the Merc HP lube. They also offer a cheaper "Merc Premium Gear Lube" that is suitable for Alpha's and low horsepower outboards, but IMHO it's not a good choice.      W
