My Volvo Penta, 5.7, inboard motor.

Recommended Posts

My Volvo Penta, 5.7, inboard motor, starts up, runs for awhile, put boat in water and it runs for an hour then cuts off and doesn't start again until the next day. What's wrong with it? This happened a few times, even after being maintenanced. I had to get a tow yesterday because the battery run down after many start attempts. What should I do here?

Sounds like you may be experiencing vapor lock.  Is you blower functioning properly?  Any air vent hoses loose?

The motor is 2006, Volvo Penta, 5.7 L, Fuel Injection. I had no prior problems with the operation, but I had ordered a new fuel pump last year and I had installed it. Fuel pump comes on and works. Should I try going back to the old fuel pump?  I still have it and I had no problems with the old pump.

I've got 2 boats.  A 1997 sig 31 wth twin 5.7 mercruiser and a ski boat with 350 SBC. All these 3 v8  all basically the same because of age.

Had exactly the same problem as you describe in the 350. Found the problem.  It was a $10 condenser in the distributor. Took ages to pin the problem down.  Ran the motor for 4 hours in the shop before the problem showed itself.

Vapor lock was an issue with Mercruiser NOT Volvo's.  The battery can cause the ECM to shut down.  Volvo highly recommends a starting battery or you will have ECM issues (it's in your engine manual).  Was your fuel pump whining? Have you changed your fuel filter?

Since he’s disclosed the boat is fuel injected it’s highly doubtful it’s vapor lock.  I’m not familiar when Volvo did away with carbs, but any carbed engine will vapor lock if the engine compartment isn’t vented well.  Boiling fuel in the lines won’t run in any brand.

The difference is Volvo’s fuel lines have always been water cooled.  That is a add on Mercruiser had to create called the cool fuel module

There is a cheap fuel pressure tester you can purchase to check the fuel pressure while running.I would start there.  it is likely either fuel or ignition related, with the most likely culprit being fuel.  Unfortunately, the fact you changed your fuel pumps, doesn't mean they are STILL good.  Have you changed your filters recently?

Start off by checking your fuel pressure, especially while having problems.  Have you noticed your fuel pump being louder recently?
