My cousin had a boat for literally 6 months and sold it. He purchased this tube, the Flying Manta Ray:

He just gave it to me, anyone have any experience with it. It looks insane...

They look like fun BUT

I believe they have been recalled by the manuf and many lakes/states have outlawed them...

I wanted one of these when they came out. After thinking about it, it seemed like a really bad idea. You are relying on steady wind to keep you aloft and a steady wind is not guaranteed at the speeds these operate. I've done some crazy stuff in my life and one thing I would NEVER do is ride one of these. Have you ever done a belly flop from the edge of a pool? Didn't feel too good. Now do it from 5-15 feet. These were recalled and destroyed before I could get back to the store to buy one, about one week after I saw it. Pretty much confirmed my get feeling about them. The manufacturer moved fast to get them off the market.

Reports of injuries started about 15 minutes after these started selling. Not bruises or minor stuff, I'm talking paralysis, knocked unconscious (in the water=not good), broken bones.

Do yourself and your family a favor and slice this thing into little pieces.

He never used it either but wants me to bring out this weekend so we can test it out. I dont think I would of rode it cause I dont really trust anyone to drive my boat with this tube behind it. But seeing the responses from you guys I think I'm going to tell him to sell it on eBay or dump it.

These interested me as well when they came out. I remember thinking the Manta Ray would be a better choice than the 'Kite Tube'. But really, you never see them anywhere and I've seen a number of scary videos of both.

Well when they came out everybody wanted one, then when the ER started filling up because of them; state DNR started outlawing them. The ones I know of forsure are IL,WI,TN,KY,MO all the states I boat in regularly.

Personally I would leave it at home.

I have a kite tube and have been on it a couple times. As far as I know these types of tubes are illegal in all states.
Are they fun? Sure. They are also incredibly unstabe when airborne. Any type of cross wind will invert the tube and send you into the water faster than you can fall. I was lucky and didn't have any bad falls but saw my buddy take some bad spills. I have no idea how he didn't get seriously injured.

I enjoy a good time more than the average person and will take more risks than a lot but being on this thing is just dumb.

I can picture middle aged man saying to his wife: Honey, I have this great new tube that glides like it's on air with no bumpy ride. Wanna go tubing tonight? B)

The analogy I gave to my buddy who was looking at buying one of these . Go stand on top of a 18 wheeler trailer doing 35mph and jump off .

Surprise , surprise the guy on my friends lake was selling it because(and get this) , his wife told him he had to ! LOL

Like the old saying goes "it's not if , but WHEN someone will get hurt"

Good luck if you still go ahead with it , they are very cool (crap I didn't just say that)

Later .
