Trailer Tie Downs - How many and Which ones

Hi

I am getting a 256 SSI and a Loadrite trailer.  I need to supply tie downs.  Which brand of tie downs are you using, and do you have any pictures of them in place ?

You just need two tie downs for the back.  They will attach to the u-bolt on the back of the bolt to the trailer somewhere around the tail light area. 

 

You can get them anywhere form Walmat, Bass Pro, and West Marine. 

 

I use the buckle style versus the ratchet or retracking models.

I actually use 3 tie downs. 2 on the stern and one on the bow.

 

The bow may be overkill but when I tow it's usually long distances over a rough road.

Oh yeah...forgot about the bow.  Some boats will just have the winch strap and a safety chain on the bow.  But I also have one on the bow as well.  This prevents the bow from bouncing if you don't get the eye of the bow sucked under the roller. 

 

So three is what I use as well.

I only use the little chain at the ramp as a safety when launching and retrieving. After that I put a 2" strap on the front eye along with 2 on the stern eyes.

The bow strap is for me, the most important. I drove a tow truck for years and can't tell you how many boats ended up on the tow vehicle when the winch standard collapsed during a frontal impact. Remember that the rear straps and winch cable are always pulling forward.

Just look how haulers secure their cargo ... the more straps the better.

 

In case of the boat on trailer, the three points at least to restrict the movement in all directions. One on bow and two far apart on stern. A double strap or chain on bow just in case the winch gives up. No straps ... no friction between boat and trailer while moving over uneven road or when decelerating rapidly. No friction ... the boat is flying on its own trajectory.

Yup, as others said: 2 at the rear and 1 at the bow. My trailer came with a buckle strap bolted to the frame of the trailer at the bow. In the rear, I have 2 buckle types. The back of the trailer is almost lined up with the stern of the boat so it's a short, straight shot.

  • BBB-08893_med.jpgi think using the Boat Buckles are a good idea. mounts via a bolt and makes for easy install and removal w/ zero handling nice clean look on the trailer.  (2) in the back and i used (1) at the bow to keep it from bouncing.

I see from the pictures you posted, that there are sway bars attached to your hitch.  What is the weight of your boat, that would require them ?  I have been pulling a 3500 lb Grady White and I have a standard type hitch ???

+1 on using 3 straps, one on the bow and 2 on the stern. The 256 weighs in around 5000 lbs, with gear and fuel could be pushing 6000 lbs. Buy some straps rated for the appropriate weight to keep the boat on the trailer in case of worst case scenario of an accident.

Well the winch is rated at 1600#, the strape rated at 5000#, that little chain maybe 250# maybe.

 

 

This thing tips the scale at 8600# loaded with 1/2 tank of gas, the WD hitch just makes it ride smoother.

Something you should keep in mind when buy tie downs for the boat. Be sure to look at the working load limit of the strap. Do not go by the breaking strength of the strap. If you use the working load limit you will never have to worry about one or all of them breaking apart.

 

Mat, what make is your weight distribution hitch? Where did you get the bracket to make the WDH work with a straight tongue trailer?

It's an "Equalizer Hitch" by Progress Mfg. they also make the tongue adapter for the trailer. I did have to make a little adjustment to the adapter it doesn't stay put.

They are not sway bars. That is a load equalizing hitch and the bars take weight off the tow vehicle. Boat, engine, and trailer approach 9,000# on a half ton pick-up, but I trailer less than most on flat ground, out in the middle of nowhere.
